Extending wire and wireless network - Part 1

Using two or more routers to extend the network

There are many methods to extend your network both Wired Network and Wireless Network. I would like to describe Two Methods in this blog.

  • Extending using Dynamic IP method [Part 1]

A) Extending using Dynamic IP method

Logic

1) Router 1 is having internet throught ONT and you want to extend your wire and wireless connection.
2) Router 2 should be also broadband router. Router 2 will receive Dynamic IP and it will distribute the internet to its network using NAT.
3) You will manually assign the different network address in Router 2 or split the main network address range in Router 1 and Router 2
4) Let's do the case study with examples

Steps

a) Connect Router 1 and ONT using PPPoE method (default broadband connection used to provide internet connection)
b) Connect WAN or Internet Port of Router 2 to the LAN port of Router 1

 

c) Now configure Router 2. 

1) Here is the example 1 with Aztech 605 router as Router 2
  • Login to the router
    • Connect your PC to the Aztech router
    • Open internet explorer, type http://192.168.1.1
    • User admin as user and admin as password (or without password)


  • Setup Internet/WAN interface
    • Go to Advanced > WAN > New Connection
    • Select Ethernet in Connection Interface, give any name in Name field
    • Select NAT option (firewall is optional), select DHCP on dropdown menu labeled as Type 
    • Click Apply then click Save Settings
  • Setup LAN Interface
    • Go to Basic > LAN Configuration
    • Type the local IP Address for your router as you wish
    • Put the Default Gateway same as Router IP Address
    • Give Host name
    • Enable DHCP Server option
    • Define starting and ending IP Range
    • Then click Apply > Save Settings
  • Wifi Setup
    • You can mange wifi name and security as per your requirement from Wireless Section.
2) Here is the example 2 with Dlink router as Router 2

a) WAN Setting
  • Login to Dlink router at http://192.168.1.1 using default username admin and password admin

  • Go to Setup link > Internet link then select Manual Internet Connection Setup
  • Apply the following settings as shown in figure
    • Select Dynamic IP
    • Give Hostname
    • Clear any value on DNS Server, Secondary DNS Server, MAC address
    • Give MTU value <1500
    • Click Save Settings

B) LAN Setting

  • Go to Setup > Network Setting 
  • Apply the setting as shown in figure below
    • Enable DHCP Server option
    • Define IP Range for local network, please put the same range IP for the router itself also
    • Save your settings
C) Wifi Setup

You can manage your wifi name and password and wifi network settings on Wireless Network option.

B) Extending network using DNS Relay

Logic

1) Router 1 is having internet throught ONT and you want to extend your wire and wireless connection.
2) Router 2 should be also broadband router. Router 2 will relay the internet from Router 1 to its local network.
3) Let's do the case study with examples

Steps

a) Connect Router 1 and ONT using PPPoE method (default broadband connection used to provide internet connection)
b) Connect any LAN port of Router 2 to the LAN port of Router 1


c) Now configure Router 2. 

1) Here is the example 1 with Dlink router as Router 2
  • Login to the router
    • Connect your PC to the Dlink router
    • Open internet explorer, type http://192.168.1.1
    • User admin as user and admin as password (or without password) 
  • Setup 
    • Go to Setup > Network Settings
    • Apply following settings
      • Give router IP and subnet mask
      • Type router 1 IP address as Local Domain Name
      • Deselect the enable DHCP Server option
      • Save the settings
    • You can manage your wifi name and wifi password on Wireless Network option.

B) Extending network using DHCP Relay

Logic

1) Router 1 is having internet throught ONT and you want to extend your wire and wireless connection.
2) Router 2 should be also broadband router. Router 2 will relay the DHCP IP Addresses from Router 1 to its local network.
3) Let's do the case study with examples

Steps

a) Connect Router 1 and ONT using PPPoE method (default broadband connection used to provide internet connection)
b) Connect any LAN port of Router 2 to the LAN port of Router 1

 

c) Now configure Router 2. 

1) Here is the example 1 with Aztech 605 router as Router 2
  • Login to the router
    • Connect your PC to the Aztech router
    • Open internet explorer, type http://192.168.1.1
    • User admin as user and admin as password (or without password)

  • Setup
    • Go to Advance > WAN Interface > Quick Setup or any connection name appearing after the option Connection Scan
    • Click on Delete button to remove and WAN Interface > Save Settings
    • Go to Basic > LAN Configuration
    • Define router ip address, give host name, give router 1 IP address as Domain
    • select DHCP Relay option
    • Click Apply then Click Save settings

    • Manage your wifi name and wifi security in Wireless Link
