Installation Standards

Installation Standard

Substandard installation by field engineers (who are responsible to fix cable, sockets, devices and activate the services such as Internet, IPTV, telephone) is the root cause of customer complaints.

Although most field engineers are well trained, they will try to do short-cut and smart works and fail to adhere the standard. One wrong installation or substandard work is enough to make you suffer for whole contract period. As per Du and Etisalat customer care, both will support their home and enterprise customers for 28 days without any charges provided that there should be no customer fault. But there are the chances - field engineer will re-visit and show customer side fault in their report and make customer to pay the service charges.

In this blog, I will give you idea about installation checklist and common installation standards to verify whether the field engineer is providing quality work or not.

Common practices


  • The fiber cable and cat6 cables should be protected, make sure they are not laying fiber openly. Field engineer must protect the cable by using flexible pipe and/or trunking. Inside customer flat/villa/office most ISPs do not provide PVC pipe or COPEX as it is chargeable in most cases.
  • Flexible pipe must be fixed using holder and trunking must be fixed properly using screws after drilling. The self-adhesive trunking is not reliable for more than 1.5m lenth, hence drilling is compulsory. The holder should be fixed on every 1.5m interval and same goes for drilling also (depending upon the protection and strength).
  • Patch cords should be punched or fixed properly if there is patch panel inside customer premise. You can request your ISP for internal cabling but you must apply and pay the manpower and items charges as per agreement. Your ISP is not bound to do internal cabling of your flat/villa/office. 
  • If you have additional router or access point, you can request field engineer to fix them as well but you cannot force them. As for such additional services, you must give application. Your ISP is not bound to configure the devices purchases from outside market.
  • ONT and sockets should be in correct alignment and tightly fixed in the wall. If there is patch panel box, ONT can be placed inside or fixed by drilling the metal plate. Use of the double mask tape is considered as substandard work.
There is common standard for installation. The pictures shown below may vary according to actual site scenario and new training or instructions provided to field engineer. Please make sure they are fixing things properly and is acceptable to you. You don't have to pay them and they are not doing any favor to you by providing quality work. Quality is everybody's responsibility.

Installation Checklist 


  • Support number available or not
  • On-site payment required or not
  • Router is required or not
  • Verify Landline service
  • Verify Internet service
  • Verify TV service
  • Support number

    Note down the field engineer name and mobile number, his supervisor name and mobile number and customer care number (give one miss call). In UAE it is common to ask field engineer number and name otherwise you will end up answering call center questions.
  • On-site payment

    Do not pay for anything (socket, cat6 and fiber cables, patch cords, connectors, screws, trunking, masking tape) as all are included in installation charge. All you have to do is provide power extension cord upon request.
  • Router

    If you are new customer
    • Etisalat connection
      • always apply for Etisalat PnP router if you are normal residence customer
      • purchase best quality Cisco brand router, if you are enterprise customer. Etisalat router is custom firmware and does not have satisfactory performance but price is double than the market price.
    • Du connection
      • purchase best quality Cisco brand router
      • Du is also providing good quality TPLink router
  • Telephone service

    Check incoming and outgoing (including mobile and international calls) at the same time. It should work. Sometime additional services will be activated when your work order gets closed by the system, so you can expect maximum 24 hour for the activation of additional services.
  • Internet service

    Check the Internet through wire connection from socket and wireless connection both. Ask field engineer to verify the speed
    • direct from ONT to your laptop
    • from router to your devices using wire connection (should be maximum of applied speed)
    • from wireless connection (will show some loss if you are in another room or bit far away from the router)
    • Field engineer is not responsible for the speed if you are using your own router, low end wireless devices (such as Chinese phones), low end or virus affected laptops or vpn services.
  • TV Service

    Check the TV services, remote control buttons, subscribe channels, picture quality, video output channel, physical condition of HDMI or AV cables. Check for additional features how to operate stuffs.

Which one is good Du or Etisalat ?

Which ISP is better in UAE - Du or Etisalat ? 

Competition between the country’s two operators Etisalat and Du intensified from December 2013, when mobile users were allowed to switch between companies while retaining their phone number. But there were a significant number of complaints following the introduction of mobile number portability, with customers saying they could not migrate easily between the two operators.

As per TRA (Telecom Regulatory Authority, UAE) consumers anywhere in the UAE can decide between Du and Etisalat for fixed services (landline and Internet, IPTV provisioning not feasible yet). Both are sharing their network in various parts of UAE. 

Bitstream service refers to the work order issued by Etisalat to serve Du customers (means Du will use Etisalat network to serve its customer) and FNL service refers to the work order issued by Du to serve Etisalat customers (means Etisalat will use Du network to serve its customers).

When it comes to fixed services, you have to consider both quality and price.
